Have you noticed that when your spine is happy and healthy you experience less pain, less injuries and are overall much happier? It’s true – a happy spine is a happy life. Here’s my top tips on how to keep your spine feeling happy.
Help Support your spine
I’m not just talking about adding a pillow to your desk chair to help support your low back when you are working from home. I’m talking about incorporating some spine strengthening exerices that strengthen your back and your core muscles. What I mean by doing core exercises is not ab crunches- I am talking about the “Big 3 Stuart McGill’s Exercises” I always recommend to patients; Curl-up, Bird –Dog and side plank. I don’t recommend jumping into all of them without having a health professional watch you do it first properly. Just like with weight training you want to make sure your form is correct so you don’t get more injuries.
Make sure you are getting proper rest with the right pillow and/or mattress
Is your mattress really old? Like more than 15 years old? It might be time to shop around for a new one, same for your pillow. Sleep is so important for our bodies and it’s a chance for our cells, muscles and bones help repair and replenish so we are ready for the next day. We sleep on average maybe 1/3 of our day so we need a proper mattress and pillow to help us feel rested. My favorite pillow I recommend is the Chiroflow water pillow – I personally use this every night and it’s helped with my neck pain. It is a bit on the pricey side but you may be able to find it at a Chiropractic office close to you. The mattress we just switched to is a Tempur-Pedic but I will give my honest opinion later after I have used it for a few months.
Eat healthy foods
Eating healthy foods rich in vitamins and nutrients in vegetables, fruit and lean meats not only make you feel better but also keep your spine healthy. And like I have mentioned above – a healthy spine is a healthy life. Taking a multivitamin and any other vitamin or supplement you may be deficient in not only keeps you healthy but can also boost your energy making you feel great. If you don’t know what you are deficient in you can, a blood test can help you with that. Also don’t forget to drink lots of water to help keep you hydrated!
Don’t forget about your mental wellness
Meditating, yoga and or exercising a few times a week will help keep you mentally calm. Don’t forget to indulge in hobbies that bring you joy and try to manage your stress levels to keep them to a low.
