The relationship between the Brain and the Nervous System

If you have been in my office you have probably seen one of my posters that says “Every organ in your body is connected to the one under your hat- BJ Palmer”.  So for today’s post we are going to dig a little deeper into why the brain is so fascinating (well at least I think it is).

The Brain is the most important organ in the body because it controls a lot of things such as; thoughts, emotions, comprehension, speaking, motor, hearing and sensory to name a few.

But how does the brain do all of that you may ask… because it’s connected to your spinal cord which helps send and receive information to the rest of the body (including your organs). The brain is protected by the skull and the spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column which gives off 31 spinal nerves to the body. The brain and the spinal cord together form the Central Nervous System (CNS). It gets the name Central because the brain receives information from the entire body and coordinates all activity for the entire body. The spinal cord is a highway that contains information and communication between the body and the brain. If the spinal cord is injured, the exchange of information between the brain and other body parts becomes disrupted.

But wait… there’s more.

The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) lies outside of the brain and spinal cord. It communicates with the skin, muscles and joints. The Peripheral and Central nervous system are interconnected which is why they work so efficiently! The most important thing about the two is; CNS cannot regenerate itself so if a nerve is damaged it’s really difficult to gain the same optimal function with it again.

Do you see why the brain is so fascinating now? If it wasn’t for the brain nothing would work properly!
