Your neck and head are connected through a complex network of muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. When the vertebrae in your cervical spine lose their normal mobility, they can lead to tension that travels upward into your head.
The specific muscles that might be causing the tension headache are the suboccipital muscles which are at the base of your skull. They tend to tighten when tension and stress build in your neck. These small but very powerful muscles connect your top vertebrae to your skull. The pain can spreads across your temples and forehead in a band-like pattern. Another thing to keep in mind is poor posture which also makes this worse. When you slouch or crane your neck forward, you put extra stress on these muscles. Over time, this creates chronic tension that triggers headaches.
Nerve irritation can also play a role in tension headaches. The occipital nerves run from your upper neck through your scalp. If there is pressure or irritation on these nerves, you feel pain that radiates from your neck to your head.
How can Chiropractic help for Neck Pain and Tension Headaches?
Chiropractic adjustments target restricted vertebrae in your neck that create muscle tension and can cause pain. I also address the irritated muscles – including the ones we just discussed (the subocciptals) in order to make sure everything has been thoroughly looked at.
If manual adjustments aren’t your thing and you are looki
ng for something less aggressive- Activator adjustments are perfect for you. To learn more about activator technique click here. I also do soft tissue therapy called Graston Technique® click here to learn more about it.
Each session typically lasts 5-10 minutes. Many people feel immediate relief, though some experience mild soreness for a day or two. Icing at home will help relieve the soreness.
Key benefits of Chiropractic adjustments include:
- Increased blood flow to your head and neck
- Decreased nerve irritation
- Improved range of motion in your neck
- Reduced muscle tension and stiffness
You will also notice that your posture is better too. When your spine is aligned it’s easier to hold your head in the correct position. Also helps reduce the forward head positioning and rounding of your shoulders- almost feels like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Many patients also report they sleep better after their adjustment helping you rest more comfortably.
The effects of adjustments build over time. Regular adjustments help maintain proper function and prevent problems from returning. Chiropractic care addresses the underlying cause of your discomfort. This often leads to longer-lasting relief.
