Post-Chiropractic Care: Your Complete Checklist

So you finally came in for your adjustment to start Chiropractic care– yay! After receiving chiropractic treatment, it’s important to take care of your body to maximize the benefits of the adjustment and promote healing. Every time you leave our office I always have a few things for you to do at home and some patients lovingly call this their “homework”. This involves a combination of physical care, such as exercises and stretching, and sometimes lifestyle changes, such as diet and stress management.

Here is a comprehensive checklist for post-chiropractic care. This checklist is designed to help you maintain the benefits of your chiropractic treatment and support your overall health and well-being. It will also help you feeling better in-between your appointments so you can get back to feeling better and focus only on preventative care.

Physical Care After A Chiropractic Adjustment

After a chiropractic adjustment, it’s important to give your body time to heal. Some people feel better instantly and some need a day or 2 to feel the effects. Here are some physical care tips to follow:

  • Rest: Your body needs energy to heal itself. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and avoid strenuous activities immediately after your adjustment like running a marathon, lifting heavy weights etc.
  • Hydrate: Drinking water can help keep your muscles and joints functioning properly. And this is 100% water- not caffeinated, no sugar added – just 100% water.
  • Exercise: Gentle exercises, such as walking or stretching can help maintain the benefits of your adjustment. I can provide specific exercises based on your condition and treatment. This only helps if you remember to do it daily – not just once a week.
  • Heat or Cold Therapy: Depending on your condition, applying heat or cold to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Good Posture: Maintain good posture to support spinal health. Avoid slouching or looking down a lot, especially when using cell phones or computers for extended periods.
Lifestyle Changes for Optimal Health

In addition to physical care, certain lifestyle changes can support your health and well-being after a chiropractic adjustment:

  • Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can provide the nutrients your body needs to heal and function properly. It may be hard to do this right away but baby steps also help. Switch out 1 sugar snack with a fruit to start. Order a salad instead of fries.
  • Stress Management: High stress levels can exacerbate pain and inflammation. Techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation can help manage stress. I often go through a deep breathing exercise with patients and they are always surprised that they actually don’t take deep breaths properly!
  • Regular Chiropractic Care: Regular adjustments can help maintain spinal health and prevent future issues.
  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Both smoking and alcohol can impede your body’s healing process and lead to other health issues. It may be difficult to stop everything but slow baby steps will help.
Embrace Your Journey to Recovery

Recovery is not a destination; it’s a journey. And like any journey, it has its ups and downs, its challenges and triumphs and it’s not exactly linear. But with the right tools and support, you can navigate this journey successfully and reach your health goals.

Chiropractic care is one of the tools that can support you on this journey. By addressing the root causes of your pain and discomfort – rather than just treating the symptoms, chiropractic care can help you achieve lasting relief and improved health. But the care doesn’t stop when you leave the chiropractor’s office. The steps you take after your adjustment – the way you care for your body, the lifestyle choices you make, the mindset you adopt – these are all crucial parts of your recovery journey. I’m here to support you every step of the way, providing the care and guidance you need to navigate your path to recovery. You wouldn’t expect to get a 6-pack after working out once – the same goes for your healing journey, it takes time.
