The days are getting shorter and colder over here in Winnipeg- has that got you feeling you’ve been stuck in a slump that you can’t get out of? Good news, you’re not alone and it’s common for mood and energy levels to come and go. Knowing a few hacks to help break the cycle could make all the difference.
Here are a few tips and tricks to try.
Reset your circadian (sleep and wake) rhythm
Get your body back on track by waking up with the sun. Exposing yourself to sunlight early in the day will help your body produce serotonin for a longer period of time. Give this a try for two weeks and see if you notice a difference. If you get up and the sun isn’t out yet – try investing in a sun rise wake up alarm light to help. Amazon has some great options.
Keep your workspace and your home smelling good
Scents can be a powerful mood booster. For calming scents, choose lavender or jasmine. For relaxing scents, choose vanilla or sage. If you’re looking for energizing scents, go for peppermint, grapefruit or lemon. Candles or essential oils are great ways to get more scents into your space. While working try opting for an energizing scent to help keep you more productive.
Spend time outdoors
There’s just something about crisp cool air of fall that makes you feel more energized. Try going for a 10 minute walk at least once a day. The beauty with fall is seeing all the leaves change colour. Also makes for a great instagram picture!
Stretch when you wake up
Now that you’re getting up with the sun, do some light stretches in the morning to help your body wake up gently. Stretching can help get your circulation going, reduce muscle, and relieve stiffness. It also helps warm you up on a cold fall morning.
Unplug from social media
This happens far too often without even realizing it- you find yourself scrolling endlessly through Facebook, TikTok or Instagram. Consider doing a social media pause to reduce the amount of negativity you’re taking into your brain, or try reducing how much time you spend on it daily. Replace the habit of scrolling with a new book, journaling, or DIY project.
Add more nutritious and hearty meals to your diet daily
There’s nothing better than having comfort food during a chili evening. Fall has its own produce in season which you can make delicious meals out of. Pumpkin pie, chili, soup etc. It’s also doesn’t hurt to make you are taking a daily multivitamin, B vitamins and an omega 3 supplement to help keep your body functioning optimally.
