Chiropractic spinal Nerves

What is Chiropractic? What do Chiropractors do?

Google Definition:

noun: chiropractic

  1. a system of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.

Chiropractic is non-invasive, natural, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the Musculoskeletal System using evidence-informed research. Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands and/or instruments, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints1. We use a combination of treatments depending on the needs for the patient.

There are many techniques to provide an adjustment. I personally use a combination of techniques such as Diversified, Activator, Thompson and soft tissue therapies for my patients. I focus primarily on the chief concern the patient comes in with and how their whole body โ€“whole health is actually being affected.

I would like to share some of the most FAQs I get asked by patients.

But my problem is in the fingers, why does my Chiropractor work on my spine?

The most important organ in your body is the brain. The brain controls the Central Nervous System which then controls your entire body. The Autonomic Nervous system has two other systems; parasympathetic which is for rest and digest and sympathetic which is your fight or flight response. The spine houses all of the nerves in your body. For example, if you are experiencing numbness and tingling down the arms and fingers there is a good chance the nerves going into those regions are not flowing freely from your spine. Thatโ€™s why we check your spine for any misalignment’s to make sure we can get to the root of the problem.

What is that โ€œcrackingโ€ or โ€œpoppingโ€ sound? What can I do if I donโ€™t like hearing that?

Itโ€™s very common to hear a cracking sound when getting an adjustment. That sound is what we call a โ€œcavitationโ€ in a joint and is due to the pressure changes that occur when moving a joint through a certain range of motion. The change is pressure releases a gas from the joint and thatโ€™s when you hear a popping sound. Essentially, it is a gas bubble being released.

When using Instrument adjusting techniques such as Activator, you donโ€™t hear the popping or cracking sound but that doesnโ€™t mean that the adjustment wasnโ€™t accomplished.

I heard that once you go to a Chiropractor, you have to keep going for life. Is that true?

That depends. You only have to continue going to the chiropractor as long as you wish to maintain the health of your Neuromusculoskeletal System. At the beginning when you have, for example low back pain, you will be seeing the Chiropractor a lot more. Once we see improvement in your low back issues, we decrease the frequency of visits. The ultimate goal is to be on maintenance care where you come in once a month to help prevent any major low back pain issues. ย Going to a chiropractor is much like exercising at a gym, eating a healthy diet, or going to the dentist.ย As long as you keep it up, youโ€™ll reap the benefits!
